AMD Reaches Deal With Alibaba to Use Chips in Cloud Service

Advanced Micro Devices Inc., struggling to re-establish its data centre chip business, said Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. plans to provide cloud-computing services based on its graphics semiconductors.
China's largest e-commerce company is working on expanding the range of services it offers over the internet and will work with Advanced Micro Devices to use the chipmaker's Radeon Pro graphics, the companies said Friday in a statement.
For AMD, which is the second-largest maker of graphics chips used in high-end computers behind Nvidia Corp., the deal is the chance to kick start a return to the lucrative data centre market dominated by Intel Corp. Graphics chips are playing an increasing role in data centres where their ability to process information in parallel makes them useful in certain work loads such as image recognition.
Nvidia has pioneered this more general use of the chips, which had mainly been used by computer gamers to get a more realistic experience from their hardware. AMD, based in Sunnyvale, California, has begun its fight back from market share losses to Nvidia in graphics and Intel in general purpose processors with new products that have closed the gap in performance.
AMD's stock has more than doubled this year, making it the best performer on the Philadelphia Stock Exchange Semiconductor Index, spurred by improving sales and progress in its attempt to return to profitability.

Google posts Android 5.1 factory images for Nexus devices, leading this week's update roundup
Google pushed out Android 5.1 this week, bringing a bunch of bug fixes and a few helpings of new features to Nexus devices.
The update is targeted specifically at Nexus devices, and it will make a slow rollout to avoid borking anyone’s device. Fortunately, for the convenience of impatient enthusiasts and developers, Google posts the source files. The factory images for Nexus devices are available now for your downloading pleasure.
It’s part of our weekly roundup of major software updates for the biggest devices, including phones and tablets on U.S. carriers, unlocked phones, and even wearables. Making sure your device is running the latest available software is a good housekeeping practice, ensuring you have the latest features with fewer bugs and gaping security holes.
Nexus
Nexus 5, 6, 10: Factory images are at the ready for these devices, though if you’re patient you’ll see an over-the-air update soon.
Android 5.1 brings a lot of much-needed bug fixes, especially to the memory leak issues that were causing multiple apps to crash. There are some nice new features, however, such as device protection that requires you to log in with your Google account if your phone has been stolen, rendering it useless to a thief.
The update also includes adds multi-SIM support, HD voice, and quick settings for toggling Wi-Fi networks or Bluetooth devices.
They’re not there yet for the Nexus 9 or Nexus 7 tablets. We’ll let you know when we see them.
Verizon
LG G Pad 10.1: The LTE-powered tablet is getting a software bump that squashes some bugs. Be on the lookout for update VK10011A, which fixes some freeze ups with Google Play Movies, improves audio quality in VoIP apps, and nixes some syncing issues with Verizon’s cloud services.
Interestingly, it corrects a misspelling of Verizon’s name, which was listed as “Verzion” on the device.
Sprint
Nexus 6: There’s a Sprint support page detailing the Android 5.1 update for Nexus 6 phones purchased from Sprint. It was scheduled to go live Wednesday, so it may or may not have hit your device yet. Along with all the optimizations in Android 5.1, it also fixes duplicate SMS messages.

There’s 32GB of internal memory which is plenty, but happy snappers will be pleased to know that up to 128GB of addition storage can be added via micro SD.
The phone’s 2,900mAh battery should be able to survive a day’s photography mixed with regular use and 4G data speeds will make it easy to share content on social media.
Xiaomi Mi Note and Xiaomi Mi Note Pro
Xiaomi Mi Note and Xiaomi Mi Note Pro

Xiaomi has officially unveiled its Mi Note and Mi Note Pro, with the latter hailed as the most powerful phone in the world. Both offer staggering value at £244 and £350 respectively, given their amazing specs. These two Chinese phones are fitted with 5.7in curved screens - the Mi Note full-HD and the Note Pro Quad HD. The Mi Note Pro in particular should offer unrivalled performance, thanks to a 2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 64-bit octa-core chip, a massive 4GB of RAM and Adreno 430 graphics. And still it's thinner than the iPhone 6 Plus. There's loads more to drool over in Xiaomi's juicy spec sheet too - read more about the Xiaomi Mi Note and Mi Note Pro UK release date, price and specs here. The Mi Note went on sale in China on 27 January and sold out within minutes, while the Mi Note Pro is expected at the end of March.
new Nexus 6 2015
new Nexus 6 2015
Best new phones 2015
In 2012 we had the Nexus 4, then in 2013 the Nexus 5 and, on 15 October 2014, the Nexus 6. We can't possibly be about to get a new Nexus 7, since that's already a tablet, so we're going for new Nexus 6 2015. It'll likely run Android M, and be unveiled in October 2015 with a November 2015 on sale date. Whereas Google offered flagship specs with mid-range prices for the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5, the Nexus 6 is more costly at £499. We're hoping Google will go back to its excellent-value roots with the new Nexus 6 2015, but we'll bring you all the rumours as we hear them.
